What does Ecochip do and how does Ecochip operate ?
For computer recycling, IT services and computer repairs including office electrical items, ecochip is a non profit making social enterprise based in London and South East England and devoted to the zero landfill WEEE recycling of computer equipment and destruction of resident data to avoid the disposal of items or constituent materials at wasteful and toxic landfill sites. We encourage the use of recycled parts for our IT repairs service to lower the cost and provide environmental advantage.
Can you help us meet our legal requirements for WEEE disposal ?
Ecochip follows closely the directive 2002/96/ec of the European parliament and of the council of 27 January 2003 on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Ecochip is fully licenced by the environment agency to carry electrical items and will provide you with any required waste transfer notes.
What about our resident data and personal information ?
Where confidential data exists on storage devices within computers, ecochip prefers to destroy that data before the recycling process commences. We offer various options based upon your needs and a certificate can be provided upon request for a 100% guarantee and peace of mind.
What happens to the items donated to ecochip ?
Ecochip operates by undertaking the removal of unwanted or unused computer products from companies or residences and subsequently finding a suitable home which usually requires some kind of refurbishment of the equipment to bring it up to date or to make it presentable. Where a suitable home cannot be found ecochip farms such materials out to plastic, glass and metal recyclers respectively.
What is a community interest company (CIC) and how can my unwanted items go to charities ?
Ecochip is registered at Companies House as a Community Interest Company which it is regulated as non profit making in that it is asset locked by law. Ecochip cannot be sold. Unlike all other forms of "not for profit" organisation, a Community Interest Company can never change to a "for profit" company based upon management decision. By Law Ecochip belongs to the community rather than to the director or management.
Ecochip is a zero landfill recycler with the aim of supplying refurbished equipment to charities where possible and very often as part of the Microsoft Authorised Refurbishment scheme. As part of its service to society and over and above its environmental commitments, ecochip donates over 10% of any cash proceeds to carefully selected charities on an annual basis.
