Computer Recycling

Contacting ecochip

Once ecochip is contacted by a company or individual wishing to dispose of computer equipment an assessment is made about the recycling value of the equipment in question, this being the reason why ecochip asks for details of the items being presented for recycling.

Ecochip recycling classification

Ecochip classifies the recycling value of the equipment being offered. That recycling value in turn determines to what extent a charge will be levied on the items to be recycled. The classification given will be either high, medium or low as illustrated in the following table.

High recycling value High quantity of largely reusable and fully functional equipment No recycling charge levied by ecochip. ecochip can pay for some types of item
Medium recycling value Small quantity of largely reusable equipment or high quantity of mixed reuse potential Minimal or no recycling charge levied by ecochip and subject to location
Low recycling value Quantities of material with little reusable value Higher recycling charge levied by ecochip and subject to location
No recycling value Quantities of equipment with no reusable value Cannot be accepted by ecochip but if possible ecochip will endeavour to offer advice on its disposal

Why does ecochip charge for items of low to medium recycling value ?

The reason why ecochip charges for some types of equipment is simply to recover costs of either transportation or manpower required to break down items into their constituent raw materials as part of its closed loop recycling process. A charge is levied when the costs of transportation and recycling cannot easily be recovered by the refurbished value of the equipment itself.

How competitive is ecochip on recycling charges?

Ecochip endeavours to keep recycling costs as low as possible and for many locations ecochip is often cheaper and more reliable than the local council or other recycling organisations.

Does ecochip accept equipment delivered directly to ecochip?

Unfortunately no longer, unreliability in arrival times plus over zealous parking attendants made this method unworkable. However, our vans run on biodiesel and cover multiple pickups on the same trip which represents significant environmental advantage.

What happens to equipment of medium or high recycling value ?

Ecochip has a variety of second users and organisations waiting to acquire low price computer equipment. such users include but are not limited to charities, schools, students, and sometimes hospitals both inland and in poorer countries. Once refurbished ecochip passes on the equipment to such individuals and organisations who are unable to purchase new equipment due to financial limitations.
